Nintendo Confirms Price Variations for Physical and Digital Switch 2 Games

Starting with *Yoshi and the Mysterious Book* in May, Nintendo is set to roll out a new pricing strategy for its first-party titles. The company announced that both physical and digital versions of its games will feature a “different” suggested retail price.

So, does this mean digital Nintendo games will be cheaper than their physical counterparts? In the case of *Yoshi and the Mysterious Book*, the answer is yes. The digital edition is priced at $59.99 on the eShop, while the physical version will retail for $69.99, which is the standard MSRP for Switch 2 titles. However, Nintendo hasn’t confirmed that all digital-only games will follow this pricing trend.

This change will specifically apply to Nintendo’s own games, as retail partners will still have the freedom to set their own prices. This could lead to some stores continuing to sell Nintendo titles at previous price points. We’ll have to wait until May to see how this unfolds, as Nintendo has not provided further comments on the matter.

“Nintendo games deliver the same experiences whether in physical or digital form, and this adjustment reflects the varying costs of producing and distributing each format, giving players more options for how they purchase and enjoy Nintendo games,” the announcement stated.

Speculatively, it seems Nintendo may be leaning towards offering lower prices, but the company is cautious about using the term “cheap.” The brand has always emphasized a premium image. However, with spending in the gaming industry declining since the COVID-19 pandemic, reports indicate that Nintendo may slow down hardware production due to lower-than-expected sales.

Reducing the price of digital games could attract players who might not typically buy a game. Nintendo isn’t alone in this approach; earlier this year, there were reports of Sony experimenting with dynamic pricing for discounted games on the PlayStation store.
