Mario Galaxy Film to Feature Unexpected Star Fox Cameo

Do you enjoy surprises? Well, tough luck, because the marketing team for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie has decided to spoil a major cameo with a new poster featuring a character from outside the Mario universe. Ready to roll?

On March 26, a new character poster was unveiled, showcasing Fox McCloud, the legendary pilot from the Star Fox series. The response has been a mix of confusion and frustration, with many questioning why this cameo was revealed before the film’s release. Here’s the poster:

While this revelation might catch some off guard, others see it as confirmation of a theory that’s been circulating. Fans who have been meticulously analyzing every teaser and trailer for the Super Mario Bros Movie sequel noticed a character resembling Fox McCloud in a brief video ad from last month. For just a split second, you can spot someone in a green shirt and white vest wielding a blaster. Additionally, the appearance of Pikmin creatures in another teaser released in March further hinted that Nintendo was open to including non-Mario characters in this film. Today’s poster solidifies what many had speculated about the inclusion of Star Fox’s ace pilot.

So, what’s Fox doing in this movie? It seems likely that Nintendo and Universal are laying the groundwork for a potential Smash Bros film, akin to an Avengers-style crossover.

Incorporating Fox (and possibly other non-Mario characters) into this movie helps set the stage for that, especially since a standalone Star Fox film seems unlikely. By featuring him in the Mario-themed sequel, they can gauge audience reaction, and if he resonates well, he could return in future sequels or spin-offs, contributing to a broader Nintendo Cinematic Universe. Is that thrilling? Not really, as it feels like yet another instance of pop culture recycling itself, inching toward a world where everything blends together and uniqueness fades. But hey, at least we can expect a barrel roll joke. So, there’s that.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters on April 1. Here’s hoping it surpasses the last one!
