Classic Heroes Return in New Dragonlance Novel

A fresh trilogy of Dragonlance novels is on the horizon, crafted by the original creators, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, who first brought this cherished fantasy universe to life in 1984. The inaugural installment, Dragonlance: War Wizard, will debut under a new “classic Dragonlance” banner. This novel is set against the backdrop of the Third Dragon War, a pivotal moment in Krynn’s history that precedes the War of the Lance, the central focus of the original Dragonlance trilogy, Chronicles.

The story follows Huma and Magius, two key figures of the Third Dragon War who played crucial roles in thwarting the malevolent goddess Takhisis, also known to Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts as the Dragon Queen, Tiamat. Huma is the valiant knight who ultimately defeated Takhisis in a climactic battle, compelling her to promise to abandon Krynn—though she would later break that vow, igniting the War of the Lance. Magius, Huma’s childhood companion, is a magical prodigy born in a land that shuns mages. War Wizard explores how Magius faced persecution while forging an unexpected friendship with Huma, a bond that would significantly influence the course of history.

Weis and Hickman made their return to Krynn in 2022 with the conclusion of the Destinies trilogy, marking a significant moment for fans after a long period of uncertainty due to a complicated relationship with Wizards of the Coast. This situation had previously led to the cancellation of a planned trilogy in 2020, prompting the authors to take legal action. In October 2025, the new head of the D&D franchise announced the authors’ return, having secured a new agreement.

Originally designed as a setting for Dungeons & Dragons, Dragonlance was groundbreaking in that it paired novels with gaming products, achieving remarkable success. Over the years, Dragonlance has continued to thrive, fostering a dedicated fanbase and contributing to the iconic imagery of epic fantasy.

War Wizard isn’t the first time Huma and Magius have graced the pages of a Dragonlance novel in recent years. In 2023’s Dragons of Fate, the protagonist, Destina Rosethorn, traveled back in time to encounter these legendary heroes. Now, Weis and Hickman are poised to delve deeper into the personal journeys of Huma and Magius, offering fans an intimate look at their early years.

Dragonlance: War Wizard is currently available for preorder and is set to release on August 4.
