Stranger Than Heaven Will Explore Five Different Time Periods and Cities

During Xbox’s Partner Preview on March 26, Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio unveiled a new look at *Stranger Than Heaven*, an action-RPG reminiscent of the beloved Yakuza and Judgment series. This game will take players through five distinct time periods in the early 20th century, specifically 1915, 1921, 1943, 1951, and 1965. The narrative will unfold across five cities, with Osaka already showcased in previous trailers, while the latest footage leaves us guessing about the other locations we’ll explore. The ambitious scope of this project certainly justifies its former codename, “Project Century.”

In the trailer, we see our protagonists riding a trolley car, enjoying some cigarettes, flirting with a charming geisha, engaging in some wrestling, and getting into a brawl in what looks like a bustling steel mill. At one point, one of the characters brandishes a massive knife and delivers a shocking blow to an enemy’s ACL. “Break through Japan’s underworld,” the trailer boldly proclaims, accompanied by a jazzy drum riff. While it remains uncertain if *Stranger Than Heaven* will delve into the origins of the Yakuza saga’s Tojo Clan, the hints certainly suggest a connection.

*Stranger Than Heaven* isn’t the first title from RGG to feature multiple locations; *Yakuza 5* also showcased five cities, adding Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Nagoya to the mix alongside the familiar Tokyo and Osaka. However, based on the latest trailer, the environments in *Stranger Than Heaven* promise to be vastly different from one another, reflecting the diverse timelines.

In just a few weeks, Xbox will present “A Special Look at *Stranger Than Heaven*,” a deep-dive broadcast that will provide further details about the game’s story, setting, characters, and mechanics. This event is scheduled for May 6 at 7 p.m. EDT.
