The Controversial Street Fighter 6 Storyline Takes a Turn for the Worse
Earlier this week, Capcom announced plans to revise certain narrative elements in Street Fighter 6, specifically regarding the character Alex and his complicated relationship with his second cousin and step-sister, Patricia. Director Takayuki Nakayama expressed regret for any “confusion” caused and indicated that the company would be updating “misleading” aspects of the storyline in an upcoming patch. Initially, this seemed puzzling given the clarity of the details, but new information suggests Capcom’s approach may not be resolving the issue as intended.
In conjunction with the patch announcement, Capcom released a short story titled “A Toast Between Fathers,” which centers on Tom, Patricia’s father and Alex’s first cousin once removed/adoptive father. The narrative reflects on their childhood relationship, which resembled that of siblings. Upon reading the story, it became clear that it didn’t alleviate the situation; if anything, it reinforced the oddness of the circumstances. The Japanese version of the story provides more explicit details and appears to retcon significant parts of Alex’s backstory.
A translation shared online reveals that the Japanese version contains many of the same elements as the English one. In the story, Tom sits at a bar, contemplating his conversations about Patricia and Alex’s relationship with Alex’s late father. According to established Street Fighter lore, Tom is the cousin of Alex’s mother and had a close bond with his father as a sparring partner. The implication is that Tom is discussing their children’s relationship. Notably, the short story avoids mentioning Tom’s blood relation to Alex, omitting any reference to Alex’s mother. This omission makes it seem as though Alex and Patricia were simply childhood friends, with Alex, the older one, looking out for Patricia over the years.
Another point of contention among fans is that the Japanese version seems to alter Alex’s backstory, suggesting he only visited Tom and Patricia occasionally and distanced himself during his teenage years, ultimately living independently.
This approach feels like a convoluted attempt to salvage the romantic relationship while undermining Alex’s previously established narrative. Even with these changes, the underlying incestuous implications remain, as neglecting Alex’s mother in the story doesn’t erase that aspect. It’s unclear what Capcom aims to achieve with this direction, but it seems they’re digging deeper into a hole rather than finding a way out.
