Future RCS Update May Enable Video Calls Between iPhone and Android Users
iPhone and Android users may soon be able to make video calls through their messaging apps, thanks to a new development. Recently, the GSM Association (GSMA) revealed that the finalized RCS Universal Profile 4.0 standard will introduce a feature called Messaging-Initiated Video Calls (MIVC), enabling users to convert 1-to-1 or group RCS chats into video calls.
According to the GSMA, “MIVC will ensure the continuity of the conversation by allowing group members to join an ongoing video call that they could not accept when it started, as well as synchronise MIVC logs within the chat timeline.” This feature aims to deliver a seamless video calling experience that works across various devices and networks.
However, there’s no word yet from Apple or Google on when this feature will be available, leaving users in the dark about the timeline for integrating video calls directly into their messaging apps. Both companies have not responded to inquiries regarding this development.
In addition to MIVC, RCS Universal Profile 4.0 enhances messaging with text formatting options, allowing users to apply styles like bold, italics, and strikethrough, as well as share higher quality audio, video, and images.
