Jack Black Dreams of Starring in a Live-Action Yakuza Film, Perfect Role for His Unique Style

Jack Black has expressed his ambitions in the gaming world, aiming for roles that go beyond just voicing Bowser. Ahead of the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, he shared his enthusiasm for a live-action adaptation of Sega’s Yakuza series. While he might not fit the mold of the tough protagonist Kazuma Kiryu or his rival Goro Majima, there’s a quirky side character that could be a perfect match for his comedic style.

Patriarch Gondawara is a striking yakuza with a peculiar hobby, making a memorable entrance in 2006’s Yakuza 2 (and its 2017 remake, Yakuza Kiwami 2) during a side quest titled “Be My Baby.” In this quest, Gondawara’s henchmen block Kamurocho’s Pink Street, forcing Kiryu into a fight. After easily dispatching the goons, Gondawara offers to make amends by treating Kiryu to “mind-blowing special service” at his favorite entertainment venue. This service turns out to be a bizarre fetish experience where men are pampered in diapers by attractive women. Kiryu, trying to decline, inadvertently offends Gondawara, leading to yet another brawl. Kiryu defeats the thugs again and makes his exit.

Gondawara also appears in 2024’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, where he assists protagonist Ichiban Kasuga in creating a romantic snowstorm in Hawaii for an elderly couple, using the fluffy contents of disposable diapers. This absurd yet heartwarming scene perfectly aligns with Black’s blend of genuine emotion and exaggerated performance. Although Gondawara is portrayed as Japanese in the games, Black’s interpretation could transform him into an international man of mystery, on a quest for the ultimate man-baby experiences.

“I’m going to throw my hat in that ring,” Black mentioned regarding his interest in joining this unique crime drama. “I don’t know if there are any parts for me, like a portly American, but talk to me. Sega, give me a jingle.”

It seems Black may have overlooked Amazon’s 2024 live-action take on the series, Like a Dragon: Yakuza, which largely steers away from the games’ humor. The series had a brief run and didn’t secure a second season. Back in 2007, director Takashi Miike, known for films like Audition and Ichi the Killer, attempted to adapt the Sega franchise with Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which also received mixed reviews. This leaves fans still waiting for a definitive Yakuza adaptation—perhaps Jack Black could be the missing piece to make it happen.
