A new horror project set in the Nier universe is on the way—let’s hope it’s the real deal!
Yoko Taro, haven’t your fans endured enough? Apparently not, as an official Nier account has chosen March 31 to drop a cryptic teaser for something called Nier: Cosmic Horror, a new “project” that might or might not be a game.
The teaser is a brief 21 seconds, featuring the series mascot Emil grinning ominously in the background. Accompanied by eerie music, it showcases a biomechanical creature that looks like it could have been crafted by H.R. Giger. The post poses a haunting question: “Is hope born from nothingness? Or is it despair disguised as salvation?”
It’s been almost ten years since Nier: Automata, the acclaimed action game celebrated for its existential themes and multiple endings. Since then, the protagonist 2B has made appearances in various titles, from tactical shooters to team-based brawlers. Taro has hinted at the possibility of a new game in the Nier universe, famously stating he’d consider any project if the funding was right. So far, this has mostly led to re-releases, collaborations, and side projects like concerts and anime.
Fans are eager for a full-fledged new Nier game, making this announcement feel a bit cruel, as they’re left questioning whether they’re being teased. In Taro’s defense, he mentioned in 2025 that he’s been busy since Automata, though many of his projects have faced cancellation. He humorously noted that he doesn’t mind too much since he still gets paid.
“I don’t view [the cancellations] as a negative thing,” Taro remarked. “I believe that if I’m going to release something weird, I’d be better off not releasing anything at all.”
Whatever Nier: Cosmic Horror turns out to be, a darker interpretation of the franchise seems fitting. The series is known for its relentless themes of tragedy and death. One could argue that Nier: Automata is already a psychological horror experience for 2B, who must suppress her emotions while carrying out brutal orders.
There’s a glimmer of hope, as Japanese developers occasionally announce genuine games on April Fools’ Day. Square Enix did mention that Nier: Automata would somehow continue in February 2026. Here’s hoping this isn’t just a prank.
At this point, even The Weeknd is waiting for a new Nier game.
