New Matter Update Enhances Camera Streaming Features
The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has rolled out Matter 1.5.1, enhancing the camera and video doorbell features introduced in the Matter 1.5 update last November. While this is a minor update, it brings several enhancements that will benefit both users and manufacturers of these devices.
One of the standout features is improved camera streaming efficiency, which helps minimize bandwidth usage when multiple users or systems are accessing the same video feed. With Matter 1.5.1, cameras can now deliver multiple video streams simultaneously, each with quality settings tailored to their specific use. For instance, a video recorder can receive a high-resolution stream for archiving, while mobile devices get a lower resolution stream optimized for their screens.
Additionally, the update includes support for HEIC images, which provide better quality and smaller file sizes compared to JPEGs. It also adds compatibility with HLS and DASH streaming formats, enhancing integration with popular cloud and media platforms. Matter 1.5.1 further improves the positioning and movement capabilities of pan-tilt-zoom cameras. Doorbell devices can now play a variety of sounds beyond the standard chime when activated, including fun seasonal options, and can trigger automations when the chime plays.
