The journey to bring Subnautica 2 to our PCs has transformed from a simple wait for updates and a promising early access release in 2025 to a dramatic saga filled with leadership shake-ups, legal battles, and a surprising reinstatement of the former CEO, along with a new May release date. Can this rollercoaster ride slow down?

In terms of gameplay, we’ve been treated to a steady stream of teasers—showcase snippets, Discord updates, and even hidden screenshots from the original Subnautica. I’ve been diving deep for any new information on this survival-crafting sequel, whether it’s a small detail or a massive lore revelation. Here’s what we know about Subnautica 2.

Subnautica 2 is now set to launch into early access in May 2026. This announcement came after a court ruling reinstated former CEO Ted Gill, who promptly stated that he was unaware of this release date and that the current leadership had no authority to set it. So, while May is the official date, there’s still uncertainty about whether Subnautica 2 will actually drop then.

When we finally take the plunge, the early access version will be available on Steam, Epic Games, and the Windows Store.

Originally, Subnautica 2 was slated for early access in 2025, but a delay to 2026 was announced shortly after Krafton made significant changes to the senior leadership at Unknown Worlds, resulting in the firing of designer and director Charlie Cleveland, CEO Ted Gill, and co-founder Max McGuire.

The situation escalated when Krafton accused the former studio heads of abandoning the project, claiming it led to confusion and delays. Many are skeptical, especially since the delay conveniently avoided a $250 million bonus for Unknown Worlds for a 2025 release. This bonus period has now been extended to September 2026, as noted by the judge who reinstated Gill.

Cleveland later confirmed that he and the others were suing Krafton, asserting that Subnautica 2 was ready for early access.

Since then, a leaked internal review of the game was confirmed by Krafton, and the former leadership is also facing a lawsuit from Unknown Worlds for allegedly stealing confidential materials. Krafton has also shifted its stance on whether the game’s state influenced the firings. Gill’s reinstatement and the May release date announcement occurred without his prior knowledge or consent.

It’s been quite a saga, and while it’s frustrating for fans, it must be even more challenging for the developers navigating these leadership changes. They deserve that bonus.

The initial teasers for Subnautica 2 generated excitement, but the 2024 Xbox presentation didn’t showcase any gameplay footage. A developer vlog provided a closer look at base-building in the new alien ocean and outlined the plans for early access.

Yes, Subnautica 2 will feature a multiplayer mode, allowing players who are too scared to explore the depths alone to team up in groups of four. Co-op was a highly requested feature in the first game, but it only existed as a mod.

A developer blog on base-building describes the new system as “challenging” and “logic-heavy,” with a procedural approach that allows for more creative freedom in construction. Future updates will enable players to customize their bases with paint, color options, and lighting controls. With multiplayer, you can build alongside friends—or wreak havoc if chaos is your goal.

While details on Subnautica 2 are still sparse, Unknown Worlds has hinted at exciting new features. Players will explore a new alien world, but something seems off:

“You are a pioneer traveling to a distant world, but something is amiss. The ship’s AI insists you carry on the mission. This world is too dangerous for humans to survive… Unless you change what it means to be human. What creatures, intelligent or otherwise, await your arrival?”

As for the rest of the features planned for Subnautica 2’s early access, we’re still piecing together the puzzle.
