Nintendo Switch Pirates on Edge This April Fools’ Day
Nintendo Switch modders are well aware of the need for caution, especially as April 1 approaches, when the stakes get even higher. For years, the control panel used by those who modify their Switch has played a lighthearted prank to mark the day. However, in 2026, this playful joke could lead to serious consequences.
Hekate, a bootloader that activates before the system’s operating software, serves multiple purposes, such as choosing firmware to load and backing up the console’s internal storage.
This morning, users of Hekate woke up to find their Nintendo Switch controls behaving erratically. The tool is now reversing player inputs; for instance, pressing up sends the cursor down. “I am not amused,” one modder shared on a forum after posting a video of the prank. Another user expressed their frustration, saying, “I hate April Fools’ Day sometimes.”
While players can disable the inverted controls once they catch on, the prank poses a risk for modders. A misstep could lead to unintended actions, such as connecting to the internet or updating to an incorrect version, which could result in a ban. Some users managed to navigate the new controls with some effort, but others weren’t as fortunate.
“RIP to my Switch that just got banned because I unknowingly tapped the wrong button and accidentally went online with mods,” lamented one modder in a thread discussing the prank.
This isn’t Hekate’s first April 1 stunt. In 2025, modders experienced their cursors transforming into the troll face meme, causing quite a bit of anxiety despite the obvious joke.
“Please help, I haven’t used the Switch for a week and I don’t know what happened,” one user pleaded back then.
“Damn, I’m very scared,” another user admitted, worried about their inability to control their modded Switch properly.
