New Character and Game Modes Confirmed for Slay The Spire 2

Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano recently chatted about all things Slay the Spire 2, sharing insights on its success and what players can expect during early access. Among the exciting updates are plans for new characters and fresh game modes.

“I want to experiment with a few ideas, but they need to go through our testing phase first. Not everything will be public, but we’ll see how it goes,” Yano mentioned. “I envision the initial characters we introduce to be more straightforward. For instance, the Regent is designed around two resources, which is a core concept. The other character, Necrobinder, will be a bit more complex. But who knows what other characters we might reveal at launch?”

Yano’s comments mark the first official word that Slay the Spire 2 will feature more than the five characters currently available in early access. But that’s not all; he also hinted at three new game modes coming soon.

“There are three specific ideas I have in mind, and I’ll keep it vague to avoid spoilers,” Yano explained. “The first mode is tailored for competitive players. The second caters to those who want the Slay the Spire experience but have limited time. The third explores new ways to interact socially or in a multiplayer-like environment using the existing systems.”

As a dedicated Slay the Spire player, the first two modes seem pretty clear-cut. The first likely involves a harder difficulty with additional modifiers, while the second sounds like a speedrun mode.

The last mode, however, has me scratching my head. A social version of Slay the Spire? Perhaps a versus mode, or something akin to a VR Chat experience combined with Slay the Spire? Regardless, I have faith in Mega Crit’s vision and can’t wait to see what this intriguing third mode turns out to be.
