Netflix Introduces New Gaming App for Kids

Netflix is ramping up its focus on family-friendly gaming with the introduction of a new app called Netflix Playground. This platform is designed specifically for kids aged eight and under, offering a selection of games that come as part of a Netflix subscription, free from ads and in-app purchases.

Currently available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, Playground is set to expand globally on April 28th. The initial game lineup features titles inspired by beloved children’s shows such as Peppa Pig and Sesame Street, which is also available for streaming on Netflix. John Derderian, Netflix’s VP of Animation Series + Kids & Family TV, emphasized the goal of creating a seamless space for discovery, learning, and play.

The launch of Playground aligns with Netflix’s strategy to refine its gaming approach, shifting away from indie titles and ambitious projects like Spry Fox’s MMO Spirit Crossing. In addition to family-oriented games, the service is also venturing into cloud-based TV games, including an upcoming FIFA title timed with the World Cup.

Since introducing games in 2021, Netflix has struggled to gain significant traction, despite some notable releases like Grand Theft Auto. The company has faced challenges, including the closure of several studios, such as Boss Fight, known for the popular Squid Game: Unleashed, and a mysterious AAA studio that shut down before releasing any games. In 2025, Netflix’s president of games, Alain Tascan, outlined a new strategy focusing on TV and family-friendly games, stating, “We need to find our voice.”
