Pro Players Stunned as Dead Raid Boss Resurrects for Hidden Phase in World of Warcraft
Over the weekend, Team Liquid’s professional World of Warcraft guild tackled the latest raid introduced in the Midnight expansion. After an intense battle, they thought they had triumphed over the final boss, only to be shocked when the boss resurrected, denying them the honor of being the first to conquer this tough new raid.
Liquid banded together to push through the March on Quel’Danas raid, which launched on March 31. As is typical with new raids, numerous teams are vying to be the first to officially complete this challenging endgame encounter. With a history of being first in WoW raids, Liquid believed they had succeeded. They fought their way to the final boss, L’ura, and took her down. Some members even celebrated, standing up and stepping away from their screens.
However, no achievement notification appeared. Instead, an NPC declared, “This cannot be!”—a moment captured live by one of the raiders. Suddenly, L’ura’s health bar refilled, and she entered a hidden final phase. Things took a turn for the worse as she wiped the team, leaving both her and the raid undefeated as of April 6 at around 5:30 PM EST. (Update: Liquid has since claimed victory over the raid and the final boss!)
Fortunately, Liquid shared a compilation video showcasing the reactions of various team members during this unexpected twist, and it’s a must-watch.
“Usually, you can tell when you’re nearing the end of a boss,” said Liquid raid leader Maximum in a video following their initial attempt. “When a secret phase kicks in, you think, ‘There’s got to be more to this’… But in this fight, we celebrated because getting to zero percent was so challenging that it felt like a conclusion, right? It seemed like the end.”
The pro WoW player also noted that there had been whispers of a secret phase from previous datamines, but Blizzard often makes changes, and datamining isn’t always reliable.
Now, the team must rethink their strategy to tackle an additional, extremely tough secret phase on top of everything else required to reach that point. When Maximum was asked if this is now the hardest fight in World of Warcraft history, he simply replied, “I don’t know, man. I’m ready to be over it…”
Update: 4/6/26, 6:20 PM ET: Just like that, Liquid has regrouped after their surprise setback and completed the raid, defeating the boss and her secret phase before any other guild. They achieved this at 5:53 PM EST. Congrats!
