New Half-Life Mod Offers a Chance to Save Everyone—But It’s No Easy Task!

Half-Life is a timeless classic, a true gem in gaming history, and often hailed as one of the greatest titles ever created. However, for the scientists and security personnel caught in the chaos at Black Mesa, it’s a nightmare scenario. Enter the new mod, Half-Life: Lemmings, which allows you to rescue many of these unfortunate souls—if you can handle the challenge of managing over 40 NPCs and guiding them to safety.

After considerable effort, modders known as Team Clown have rolled out the initial version of their Half-Life: Lemmings mod, also dubbed “Half-Life: But You Can Rescue Every Scientist.” The mod’s official trailer showcases what’s in store.

This version is a demo and doesn’t encompass the entire Half-Life experience. It kicks off in the early post-incident chapter “Unforeseen Consequences” and wraps up at “Apprehension,” covering about half of the original game. There’s still a lot of action, with 45 scientists and guards to locate and save throughout this substantial segment of Valve’s iconic FPS. And yes, you can have them all trailing behind you as you make your escape from Black Mesa. Good luck managing that crowd! At the end of the demo, you’ll see a tally of how many scientists you managed to save—or didn’t.

Team Clown has put in significant effort to enhance this mod. Now, scientists can pick up pistols and assist Gordon Freeman in fending off the alien onslaught. NPCs have received new animations, allowing them to climb and jump in ways they couldn’t before. The modders have also adjusted various parts of the campaign to facilitate NPC rescues. A prime example is highlighted in a walkthrough by a YouTuber, where players encounter a scientist hiding in a dumpster. Previously, he would pop up and then vanish forever. Now, you can lure him out and add him to your chaotic entourage of armed guards and frightened scientists. Other areas have been modified as well, such as expanding the tram car in “On A Rail” to accommodate your growing group.

Watching a swarm of scientists and guards sprinting behind Gordon Freeman is quite the spectacle, and the additional tweaks Team Clown has made to Half-Life: Source—often considered the least favorable way to experience the classic shooter on PC—has me eager to dive back into this version of the game after quite some time. Don’t worry, scientists, I’m on my way to save (most of) you!
