Majora’s Mask Creator Suggests Link Might Be Better Off Silent in Zelda Film

For four decades, fans of Nintendo have been captivated by the mysterious figure of Link. The protagonist of the Legend of Zelda series is famously a man (or Hylian?) of few words. One of the rare instances where we actually hear Link speak is in the cheesy 1989 animated series, where he infamously quips, “Excuuuuse me, Princess!” to Zelda in a rather obnoxious manner. Recently, Takaya Imamura, the art director behind Majora’s Mask, shared his thoughts on the ongoing debate about Link’s voice. His stance? He’s not a fan of Link chatting away.

Imamura expressed his concerns on social media, stating, “The moment Link speaks, I can’t help but worry a little that the ‘Zelda magic’ everyone has been nurturing in their hearts might just vanish into thin air.” This comment came in response to a discussion about the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie, set to release in 2027, following the recent Super Mario Galaxy movie.

When a fan inquired about how Link might be portrayed in terms of dialogue in the new film, Imamura acknowledged that the character would “obviously talk,” but suggested that Link would likely remain a quiet figure. Given the recent Mario Galaxy movie’s approach to character development, it’s entirely possible that Link might not have much to say at all.

Although Imamura retired in 2021 after 32 years at Nintendo, he left a significant mark, having designed characters and stories for titles like F-Zero and many from the Star Fox series. He was also behind the iconic falling moon in Majora’s Mask and the quirky character Tingle, a middle-aged man with dreams of becoming a fairy. If Imamura prefers Link to stay silent, perhaps we should honor that preference.
