New Sci-Fi Extraction Shooter Set to Shut Down Just Three Weeks After Launch in 2026
Here’s a crucial piece of advice: steer clear of developing a live-service game. It’s a guaranteed way to risk losing significant amounts of money, not to mention the embarrassment of having to take a game offline shortly after its launch. We’ve witnessed this fate befall major titles like Highguard and Concord, as well as smaller yet heavily marketed projects like King of Meat. Even successful franchises like Battlefield 6 have faced layoffs in their wake. The latest casualty, as reported, is the extraction shooter The Cube, Save Us.
While not a widely recognized title, developers XLGAMES had reasons to be optimistic about The Cube, Save Us, which launched on March 18. Its demo was among the top ten most popular during last October’s Steam Next Fest, standing out in a sea of thousands. This likely boosted wishlists and created the impression of a potential audience for this post-apocalyptic, Arc Raiders-inspired game. However, just three weeks later, the announcement came that the free-to-play title would be shutting down in a month.
Though it’s premature for a full analysis, two key factors contributed to The Cube, Save Us’s downfall: dismal reviews and a lack of players. This is a tough spot for any live-service game to recover from, especially for a smaller team like the one behind ArchAge. Currently, the game holds nearly 70% negative reviews on Steam, with a peak of just 5,177 concurrent players on launch day, never to reach that number again. Player counts have dwindled to the low hundreds shortly after launch, despite being free. It’s also notable that the game hasn’t garnered a single review from any established gaming outlets or even a user rating on Metacritic. It seems to have vanished without a trace.
It’s disheartening to see so many projects, which clearly involved years of hard work and dedication, go unnoticed. It’s even more painful when the few who do try the game express their dissatisfaction. Steam reviews have highlighted issues like poor controls, lackluster combat, and an overemphasis on free-to-play cosmetic purchases, which have deterred most players from engaging with The Cube. In many ways, it needed to compete with Arc Raiders but fell short. One reviewer bluntly stated, “Not even jiggly boobs can save this one.”
Now, XLGAMES has posted on the Steam store page to announce the game’s impending closure. Opening with the somewhat awkward line, “Survive the Wrath of the Cube!” the message ultimately delivers the sad news. “Today, it is heartbreaking that we have to deliver unfortunate news to the Raiders. The Cube, Save Us… will have its end of the story on May 8, 2026.”
No further details have been provided regarding the reasons for the shutdown, but the post does mention that all purchases made “legitimately” through Steam will be automatically refunded starting April 9.
