Sony is finally revamping the PS5 user interface.
Sony Interactive Entertainment is experimenting with some updates to the PlayStation 5 user interface, aiming to tackle a minor yet persistent annoyance for console users. This proposed change will impact the top menu bar of the PS5’s UI, as revealed by images shared by participants in Sony’s beta testing program.
Currently, the PS5 UI is divided into two main sections: Games and Media. The Games section showcases icons for recently played titles, a “Welcome” information tab, and quick access to the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Plus, and Game Library. Meanwhile, the Media section houses streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube, Crunchyroll, Spotify, and Twitch. Users switch between these sections using the L1 and R1 buttons on the DualSense controller.
Reports from some beta testers indicate that Sony intends to reposition the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Plus, and Game Library icons above the individual game icons. This adjustment would streamline access for PS5 owners, making it quicker to dive into the PlayStation Store or their game library.
The updated UI is a small but appreciated enhancement. Since the PS5’s launch in 2020, there haven’t been significant changes to the main user interface, and expanding the functionality of the L1/R1 buttons beyond simple navigation would be a notable improvement.
In 2024, SIE introduced the customizable Welcome hub to the PS5 UI, allowing users to personalize their space with widgets for quick information access before gaming sessions. This hub replaced the previous Explore tab.
There’s no official word on when this long-awaited update will be available to all PS5 users, but if you’re keen on experiencing the beta testing phase, you can find more information and express your interest on the official PlayStation website.
