Doki Doki Literature Club Battles Google Play Store Removal Over Sensitive Content Concerns
Doki Doki Literature Club is no longer accessible on Android devices. The popular 2017 visual novel was taken down on April 8 due to an alleged breach of the Google Play Store’s terms of service. Serenity Forge, the developer, is actively working to have the game reinstated and has defended its approach to mental health topics.
In a statement released on April 9, the company explained, “Their reasoning is that the game’s content violates their Terms of Service in its portrayal of sensitive themes. DDLC is widely praised for its representation of mental health, resonating with players globally and helping them feel heard, understood, and less isolated in their experiences.”
The statement continued, “Achieving that—making a genuine impact through the power of fiction to connect with others—is what I’m most thankful for. It motivates me daily to create new experiences that can truly reach people, especially those seeking connection.”
At first glance, Doki Doki Literature Club may seem like a typical anime-style school romance visual novel, but its narrative quickly delves into much darker territory, featuring a meta-narrative that alters the player’s perception of the game. “This is a truly special game,” noted a former writer in their initial impressions back in 2017. “If you enjoy horror games that really get under your skin, you should definitely check out Doki Doki Literature Club.”
The game was added to the Google Play Store last December without any issues and is still available on the Switch eShop, PlayStation Store, Xbox, and Steam. The Android version boasted an almost perfect user rating with over 20,000 reviews. Its unexpected removal has led some fans to speculate that it’s part of a broader crackdown by banks and payment processors on platforms hosting content deemed objectionable by certain censorship groups.
Last summer, several games faced bans from Steam and other platforms for including NSFW content or even just adult themes. However, since Doki Doki Literature Club is still available on iOS, it’s also possible that Google simply made an error.
