The EFF is leaving X.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit focused on digital privacy, has decided to stop posting on X as of Thursday, citing a significant drop in engagement on the platform over recent years. In a blog post detailing this move, Kenyatta Thomas, the nonprofit’s social media and video manager, noted that their impressions on X have plummeted from 50 to 100 million per month to just 13 million for all of last year across 1,500 posts. To illustrate the decline, Thomas pointed out that a post on X now garners less than 3% of the views that a single tweet received seven years ago.

The blog post also highlighted concerns about the evolving culture and policies at X as contributing factors to their exit. Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022, the EFF had publicly outlined desired changes for the platform, such as improved content moderation transparency, enhanced security, and increased user and developer control. However, they assert that these changes have not been implemented, with Thomas remarking, “Many users left. Today we’re joining them.”

Despite this departure, the Electronic Frontier Foundation will continue to promote discussions on digital privacy and free speech through its other social media platforms, including Bluesky, Mastodon, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube.
