The Metal Gear Solid movie is moving forward with a dynamic horror directing team at the helm.
Sony Pictures is reviving the Metal Gear Solid movie, with the directing duo of Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, known for their work on Final Destination: Bloodlines, taking the helm for this new live-action adaptation of the iconic tactical stealth action game series. As reported, Lipovsky and Stein secured this project through a new first-look deal with Sony, where they are also developing an animated film centered on Spider-Man’s anti-hero, Venom.
“Metal Gear Solid was a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever changed the landscape of video games,” Lipovsky and Stein expressed in a statement. “We are excited and honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s legendary characters and unforgettable universe to life.”
The duo’s filmography is quite diverse. Alongside their recent work on Final Destination: Bloodlines and the 2018 sci-fi thriller Freaks, they have also contributed to family-friendly projects like Kim Possible for Disney and Fraggle Rock for Apple. Lipovsky has experience with video game adaptations, having directed the 2015 film Dead Rising: Watchtower, which was based on Capcom’s humorous zombie horror franchise and starred Jesse Metcalfe with Rob Riggle as Frank West.
The pair has also been involved in writing for Chris Columbus’ Gremlins 3, blending elements of horror with kid-friendly appeal.
Producing the new Metal Gear Solid film are Avi Arad and Ari Arad, who have been trying to bring a Metal Gear Solid movie to life for over a decade. Their previous attempt featured director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) and had Oscar Isaac in mind for the lead role. Although that version has been scrapped, it’s not the first time the franchise has faced hurdles in adaptation; Hideo Kojima himself announced plans for a live-action Metal Gear Solid film back in 2006.
Kojima has been absent from the Metal Gear franchise for over ten years, having left Konami in 2015 to establish Kojima Productions, which is best known for the Death Stranding games. Interestingly, a Death Stranding movie is already in the works, with A24 producing and Michael Sarnoski, director of A Quiet Place: Day One and Pig, at the helm.
Currently, there are no details regarding the release date, writers, or casting for Metal Gear Solid. However, with a growing number of successful video game-to-film adaptations making waves at the box office, there’s hope that Sony Pictures can finally bring Metal Gear Solid to the big screen. After all, they were the ones who made the Legend of Zelda movie a reality.
