Amazon’s Spider-Verse Series Impressively Matches the Scale of Spider-Man Films
Two new trailers for Spider-Noir were unveiled at CCXPMX26, showcasing the comic book-inspired elements of the upcoming superhero drama featuring Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, also known as The Spider. These trailers highlight the show’s unique take on some classic Spider-Man villains.
The trailers delve into the relationship between The Spider and Black Cat, while also delivering plenty of action, including battles against Sandman and Megawatt. Brendan Gleeson takes on the role of Silvermane, a mob boss and Spider-Man adversary, who plays a significant part in the story. You can check out both the black-and-white and “True-Hue” color versions of the trailers.
Drawing inspiration from Cage’s portrayal of Spider-Man Noir in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Noir adapts an alternate universe series of Spider-Man comics set in the 1930s. The narrative follows Ben Reilly, a private investigator with powers akin to Spider-Man’s. Although Reilly had hung up his web-slinging suit, the events of the show compel him to don the mantle of The Spider once more, facing off against villains like Sandman and Tombstone.
One of the villains featured in the trailer possesses electricity-based abilities reminiscent of Electro, but is actually a lesser-known foe named Megawatt. After viewing the initial trailer, there were concerns that Spider-Noir might lean too heavily into a grounded approach, neglecting the more fantastical aspects of its comic book roots. However, this latest trailer suggests that Spider-Noir will embrace the entertaining elements of the source material, showcasing a variety of obscure villains and superpowers in action.
The premiere episode of Spider-Noir is set to air on MGM Plus on May 25, with the entire season dropping on Prime Video on May 27. The show will be available in both color and black-and-white, mirroring its trailers, giving fans a reason to enjoy it twice if it lives up to expectations.
Nic Cage is set to portray a unique blend of two unconventional interpretations of Spider-Man.
