Exciting Updates for Final Fantasy 14: New Jobs, Enhanced Battles, and Evercold Unveiled!
Friday’s keynote at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest was a whirlwind of announcements that left even seasoned players feeling a bit overwhelmed. As a dedicated fan myself, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement as we learned about the upcoming major expansion, Evercold, set to launch in January 2027. The reveal included a flashy teaser trailer and some stunning concept art, featuring a cat and a whimsical “kitty town” that had the crowd buzzing. This expansion marks the beginning of a brand-new saga in the game’s 13-year history, which is a significant milestone.
For those who find the extensive keynote presentation daunting, here’s a quick rundown of the key highlights. The latest expansion, Evercold, was officially announced, and it promises to bring a wealth of new content. Square Enix is also introducing quality-of-life improvements to make the game more accessible for players balancing real-life jobs. One of the new features resembles a battle pass, allowing players to claim daily bonuses from roulettes on a weekly basis, which was met with mixed reactions from the audience.
In a move to simplify things, the game’s two-patch cycles will now be referred to as seasons, making it easier for players to understand the flow of updates. While this change doesn’t alter the core mechanics, it’s a helpful clarification for the community. Additionally, patches are expected to roll out more frequently.
Players will still need to level jobs individually, but now they can reflect their highest item level across other jobs, making it easier to switch roles. The character creator is also getting a significant upgrade, introducing “character action skins”—essentially emotes that adapt to different situations. New customization options will include color pickers, eyeshadow, layered face paint, and adjustable gear components, showcased through vibrant characters, including an eye-catching Lalafell.
A new medium difficulty option for 8-person raids is on the way, along with potential changes to 24-person raid progression routes to streamline the experience. However, these adjustments may not necessarily shorten the raids. More details will be shared at future Fan Fests.
One of the most exciting announcements is the removal of regional data center boundaries. This means players can now team up with anyone across North American data centers, breaking down barriers that previously limited gameplay. This change is particularly significant for those who have been stuck in a data center separate from their friends.
New jobs are also on the horizon for Evercold, including a tank and a physical ranged DPS, with more details to come. The previously mentioned limited job, Beastmaster, will debut in Patch 7.56. For the main 21 jobs, players can now choose between Reborn Mode, which retains the current combat style, and Evolved Mode, which offers a revamped combat experience with simpler rotations. This is a welcome change for those who have struggled with complex rotations, and it won’t require new gear or levels. However, future jobs will only feature Evolved Mode.
The maximum level cap is set to rise to 110, and players can look forward to new dungeons, FATEs, gear, enemies, raids (including an ultimate raid featuring the iconic Kefka), and PvP content.
FFXIV has had its share of collaborations, but the upcoming partnership with Neon Genesis Evangelion has fans particularly excited. Yoshi-P, a self-proclaimed Evangelion enthusiast, shared his enthusiasm for this new series of raids.
In a humorous note, Yoshi-P warned that FFXIV is growing too large for the PS4, hinting that players on that console may need to upgrade soon. He joked, “If you’re still playing on a PS4, you’ve got two years to save up for a PS5.”
The free trial for FFXIV is also getting an extension, now allowing players to experience the game up to the third expansion, Shadowbringers, without a hefty price tag.
Looking ahead, Patch 7.5 is set to launch on April 28, followed by Patch 7.51 on June 2, Patch 7.55 on July 28, and Patch 7.56 on September 8.
Lastly, FFXIV is making its way to the Switch 2 in August, with a month-long early access period before the official release, though the pricing may leave some fans wanting more.
While we didn’t get all the answers we hoped for, the promise of future announcements at upcoming Fan Fests in Berlin and Tokyo keeps the excitement alive.
