Get Ready: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Hits Streaming Soon!

It’s been just under a month since the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in theaters worldwide on April 1. If you’re holding out for the Nintendo adaptation to hit a streaming service, you won’t have to wait much longer.

Directed by Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath, known for their work on Teen Titans Go!, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie draws inspiration from Nintendo’s 2007 game, Super Mario Galaxy, and serves as a sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. After their victory over Bowser, voiced by Jack Black, Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) are enjoying a peaceful life in the Mushroom Kingdom. However, their tranquility is disrupted when they learn that Peach’s long-lost sister, Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson), has gone missing, possibly due to Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr. (also voiced by Jack Black).

Peach, determined to rescue her sister, teams up with Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) for a new intergalactic quest. They are soon joined by Mario, Luigi, and their newest ally, Yoshi (Donald Glover).

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie had a hugely successful opening weekend, although it has since been surpassed by an unexpected rival. Despite its strong start, the latest Mario adventure is set to arrive on streaming sooner than anticipated. According to sources, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be available for premium video-on-demand (PVOD) on digital platforms starting May 5. While this information seems reliable, it’s worth noting that the official release date has yet to be confirmed.

Given that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has only recently hit theaters, a May 5 streaming release feels a bit premature. However, it aligns with Universal Pictures’ typical window for theatrical to digital releases, which usually spans at least five weekends before transitioning to video-on-demand. By 2027, this window will extend to seven weekends.

One reviewer described Universal Pictures’ latest Mario adventure as “dazzling, candy-coated chaos.” If that sounds like a film you’re eager to enjoy with your family, get your snacks ready—May 5 is just around the corner!
