Sony Raises PS5 Prices in Additional Countries Due to Ongoing Global Economic Challenges

Sony has just revealed new price increases for the PlayStation in several East Asian markets. This announcement follows similar hikes in the U.S., UK, Europe, and Japan just a month prior, with the company citing global economic factors as the reason for these significant adjustments.

In South Korea, for instance, the PS5 with a disc drive will now cost ₩948,000 ($644), while the PS5 Digital Edition will rise to ₩858,000 ($583), and the PS5 Pro will hit ₩1,298,000 ($882). Additionally, the PlayStation Portal will see a price increase to ₩378,000 ($250). Overall, this represents a staggering 43-percent increase from the original launch price of the all-digital PS5 in South Korea.

The full list of price adjustments was shared earlier today, effective May 1, and includes changes for markets in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

These price hikes reflect the ongoing RAM shortage and the rising costs of various gaming components, alongside Sony’s stronghold in the high-end console gaming sector. There have been whispers about the company working on the PS6 with a focus on affordability, but it remains to be seen how a more advanced system could be priced lower than its predecessors. The current console landscape has certainly felt topsy-turvy.
