Top Warlock Build Strategies for Diablo 4
The ultimate Warlock build in Diablo 4 revolves around the abyss—a fresh shadow-based skill category exclusive to this class. While these demon-summoning sorcerers can unleash hellfire or call forth minions, their shadow builds are particularly devastating, especially during the leveling phase, thanks to a standout skill: Dread Claws.
As a player who often dives into shadow Necromancer builds, I can’t help but envy the Warlock’s impressive abyss skills, including the top-tier shadow minion available through their Soul Shard mechanic.
This guide will delve into the Warlock skill tree, so if you want to discover it all on your own, now’s your chance to step away. For those ready to dive in, here’s the best Warlock build I’ve uncovered in Diablo 4’s Lord of Hatred expansion after spending 20 hours with the class.
A key component of this abyss build is the Mastermind Shard, which you unlock through the Warlock class quests and the Soul Shards mechanic. This shard summons a shadow worm minion named Laalish, who follows you and attacks foes.
Laalish is crucial because his shard provides a 30% damage boost for abyss skills while you’re in Shadowform, along with an extra 5% movement speed for each stack. Activating the Command Laalish skill creates an AoE zone that helps you easily gain Shadowform. Additionally, you’ll want to grab the Subjugation Fragment passive for the Mastermind Shard when it becomes available, as it enhances your Greater Demons—specifically, the Profane Sentinel turret—and helps regenerate the Dominance needed to summon them.
I’ll break down these elements further below, but having Shadowform and the associated damage bonuses is vital for any abyss build.
Here are the skills I recommend, along with the passives to select as you meet their level requirements:
Stay updated with the latest and greatest in gaming.
While not an abyss skill like Doom, Hellion Sting serves as an effective basic skill due to its range and speed, plus its ability to Eviscerate, stacking bleed on enemies, making it a strong choice early on. Since Dread Claws is the real damage dealer in this build, Hellion Sting primarily helps generate Wrath when you’re running low.
Dread Claws is an incredibly potent abyss core skill, unleashing a wave of overlapping slashes that can hit enemies multiple times. Its strength lies in its passives, which can boost damage by up to 100% based on cast time, deal more damage with the first claw that strikes an enemy, and increase both the number of claws and the damage of subsequent hits.
The most significant buff is the 50% damage increase for every claw while in Stealth, which you can achieve with Shadowform. This build allows you to capitalize on that bonus through Nether Step, the Mastermind Shard, and the Terror Demon Metamorphosis ultimate once you reach a higher level.
Nether Step is a fantastic survivability skill, akin to Blood Mist for Warlocks, and grants you four stacks of Shadowform upon emerging. Moving with Shadowform consumes a stack and grants Stealth, making you untargetable while also enhancing damage effects for abyss skills. Dread Claws benefits from the Ambush passive, and the Mastermind Shard boosts all abyss skills’ damage by 30% while you’re in Shadowform.
The best passive to choose is Gloomwalker, as it allows you to position yourself perfectly for a Dread Claws cast while maximizing the damage bonus from being stealthed and building damage by not casting for a while.
This abyss turret excels at taking down elites and bosses. Once summoned, you can direct its targeting, and with the recommended passives, it will deal increased damage while focusing on a single target, ramping up over time. I also suggest taking the Subjugation Fragment for the Mastermind Shard, which boosts its damage by 1.75% per Dominance on cast, leading to a 52.5% increase if you cast at full.
This passive also grants 1 Dominance every two seconds while you have Shadowform, which you’ll frequently maintain with this build.
Terror Swarm is a powerful AoE ultimate that I recommend using until you hit level 40 and unlock the Terror Demon passive for the Metamorphosis ultimate, which elevates this build significantly. It’s still a solid ultimate, as you can cast it and let it handle enemies on its own, growing larger as it devours foes.
Make sure to switch from Terror Swarm to Metamorphosis as soon as you reach Level 40 and unlock the Terror Demon passive. This transformation allows you to enter Demonform, turning this skill into a superstate where you gain Shadowform stacks every second. This supercharges your Dread Claws, applying damage passives with every cast, while also increasing your max life by 20% and featuring a very short cooldown.
Your basic skill will also regenerate Dominance, and with the Subjugation Fragment on the Mastermind Shard, you’ll regenerate even more Dominance while in Shadowform. This makes it easier to summon your Profane Sentinel, consuming all your Dominance for a significant damage boost.
Once you’ve unlocked all these skills and their passives, prioritize leveling Dread Claws, Profane Sentinel, and Metamorphosis.
There are four unique Warlock items to keep an eye out for with this build:
|
Unique |
Effect |
|---|---|
|
Litany of Sable (dagger) |
Dread Claws deal 100-120% increased damage and additional claws fire out when you gain a stack of Shadowform. |
|
Seal of the Ophanim (ring) |
Profane Sentinel deals 230-270% increased damage and summons an additional eye that follows you for 10 seconds. |
|
Rictus of Terror (helm) |
Laalish deals 100-120% increased damage. Command Laalish’s Terror Realm is an ultimate skill that lasts 100% longer and while active your abyss skills execute enemies. |
|
Night Terror (amulet) |
Your abyss skills deal 6-9% increased damage for each stack of Shadowform. This bonus is increased by 100% when you have Stealth. |
These will drop from specific bosses, but remember, you can also upgrade a common dagger, amulet, helm, or ring at the Horadric Cube once you unlock it through the Lord of Hatred campaign—this is how I obtained Rictus of Terror.
For Aspects, I recommend:
|
Aspect |
Effect |
|---|---|
|
Deeper Shadows |
Maximum Shadowform stacks increased by 2-6. |
|
Diabolical Armor |
Demonform grants 20% damage reduction plus an additional 0.5-1% for 5 seconds, anytime you take fire damage, up to 5-10%. |
|
Malicious Aspect |
While in Demonform, you deal 2.5-4.5% increased damage for every Demon or enemy close to you, up to 50-90%. |
|
Demonic Aspect |
Each hit with Demonology skills increases the damage you deal with Demonology skills by 2.3-3.3% for 10 seconds, up to 45-65%. |
|
Insidious Aspect |
Your abyss skills deal 60-80% increased damage to enemies who have not hit you in the last 2 seconds. |
|
Fathomless Dark |
Your abyss skills deal increased damage equal to 60-80% of your shadow resistance damage reduction. |
Deeper Shadows and Demonic Aspect are particularly strong for a Demonform Dread Claws build, especially if you have Night Terror to boost damage for each stack of Shadowform. To further enhance your build, consider tempering your gear at the blacksmith with new Warlock affixes, such as:
Abyss Damage should be your top priority due to its higher roll range, but don’t forget to buff your Maximum Life to maximize the Metamorphosis Damage Scaling passive, which increases your Demonology skill damage by 1% for every 842 bonus life you have—Dread Claws is a Demonology skill, after all.
That said, I managed to breeze through every boss and level in the campaign without any Uniques, Aspects, or Tempered affixes. This build is incredibly powerful, especially with the short cooldown on Demonform, providing a reliable source of Shadowform and Stealth for the substantial bonuses they offer alongside Dread Claws and its other damage-boosting passives.
