Comics Icon Gerry Conway, Creator of The Punisher, Passes Away at 73

Comic book icon Gerry Conway, the mastermind behind characters like the Punisher, Jason Todd, and Ben Reilly, has passed away at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife, Laura, and daughters Cara and Rachel.

Conway’s journey in the comics world began early; he was born in Brooklyn on September 10, 1952, and by 16, he was already selling stories for anthology titles such as DC’s House of Secrets and Marvel’s Tower of Shadows. His love for superheroes led him to work with Marvel editor Roy Thomas, and his career took off when he was assigned to Daredevil starting with issue #72. From there, he would go on to write for many of Marvel’s biggest characters, achieving remarkable success before even hitting 30.

At just 19, Conway began his legendary run on The Amazing Spider-Man, which remains one of his most celebrated contributions. During his time on the series, specifically from issues #111-149, he introduced key characters like the Jackal and the Spider-Clone Ben Reilly, as well as the antihero Punisher—a character whose appropriation by various groups Conway publicly rejected. Among his many classic stories, “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” stands out as a defining moment in comic history. He later returned to the Spider-Man universe, writing for Spectacular Spider-Man and Web of Spider-Man throughout the 1980s.

Conway’s influence extended far beyond Spider-Man. He brought Marvel’s Dracula to life in Tomb of Dracula #1, co-created Werewolf By Night alongside Roy and Jean Thomas and Mike Ploog, wrote around 100 issues of Justice League, and was responsible for the first Marvel-DC crossover with 1976’s Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man.

After a successful run in comics, Conway stepped away from the medium from 1993 to 2009, during which he contributed to several beloved television shows. His writing credits include scripts for Law & Order, Diagnosis Murder, and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, as well as work on animated series like Batman, My Little Pony, and Transformers, along with cult classics like The Centurions.

Rest in peace to a true legend. Our thoughts are with Conway’s family during this difficult time.
