Subnautica 2 Sets Official Release Date After Prolonged Uncertainty
After a tumultuous pre-launch journey, Subnautica 2 has finally locked in its release date. This underwater survival adventure is set to dive into early access on May 14 for Windows PC and Xbox Series X, as announced by developer Unknown Worlds.
The third installment in the series, following 2018’s Subnautica and 2021’s Subnautica: Below Zero, will continue the tradition of underwater exploration and survival. Players will venture into a new planet teeming with vibrant marine life and colossal Leviathans to discover. A significant addition this time around is the multiplayer feature, allowing up to four players to explore together, enhancing the experience beyond solo play.
“Co-op will help the game have an identity that feels very distinct,” said game design lead Anthony Gallegos during a recent video call. For Gallegos and the team at Unknown Worlds, integrating multiplayer was as crucial as the new setting and narrative.
The launch of Subnautica 2 follows a lengthy legal dispute between Unknown Worlds and its publisher. Initially announced in late 2024, the project faced challenges when, in July 2025, the publisher delayed the early access release and dismissed key executives from Unknown Worlds, leading to a legal battle over a potential $250 million payout.
The legal saga continued into March of this year, culminating in a court order for the publisher to rehire a dismissed executive. Shortly after, a May release window for Subnautica 2 was announced, even before the executive could fully evaluate the game’s status.
In early April, the publisher’s name was removed from Subnautica 2’s Steam page, raising questions among those following the legal developments. However, Gallegos confirmed that the publisher is still involved in bringing Subnautica 2 to market. “We’re co-publishing it together,” he stated. “We’re working through it all together.”
Unknown Worlds is also committed to engaging with the Subnautica community. Gallegos mentioned that early access is “built into the DNA of the studio,” and the team plans to incorporate player feedback throughout the early access phase, just as they did with their previous titles.
Subnautica 2 will launch in early access on May 14, with expectations to remain in this phase for two to three years before reaching a full 1.0 release.
