My Adventures with Superman is set to revisit a beloved ’90s comic storyline.

Adult Swim’s *My Adventures with Superman* stands out as one of the top superhero series on television, offering a unique twist on the iconic character by blending his narrative with anime influences. Showrunners Jake Wyatt and Brendan Clogher have taken creative liberties in reimagining Superman’s rogues’ gallery, and they’re building excitement for season 3 this summer with a sneak peek at one of Superman’s most formidable foes.

Hank Henshaw (voiced by Max Mittelman) made his debut in season 2 as a S.T.A.R. Labs pilot who views Superman as a threat to humanity. His suspicions were largely validated at the season’s conclusion when Brainiac (voiced by Michael Emerson) brainwashed Superman and launched an assault on Earth. Hank attempted to resist but was ultimately shot down by the Kryptonian AI’s space station.

The L on Cyborg Superman’s suit suggests that Hank was gravely injured during the confrontation and subsequently revived as a cyborg by his ally Lex Luthor (also voiced by Mittelman). In a discussion with an outlet, Wyatt and Clogher revealed they are adapting *Reign of the Supermen*, the 1993 comic arc that introduced Cyborg Superman. This storyline followed *The Death of Superman* and showcased various new iterations of Superman attempting to fill the void left behind. Among these alternate versions was John Irons, aka Steel, who also appeared in season 2, and Superboy, who will join the fray in season 3.

Cyborg Superman served as the main antagonist in *Reign of the Supermen*, collaborating with the alien warlord Mongul in a plot to obliterate Metropolis and transform the city into a massive weapon. The resurrected Superman thwarted his plans, but not before the villains devastated Green Lantern Hal Jordan’s hometown. This tragedy pushed Hal toward a darker path in the *Zero Hour* arc, where he sought to manipulate time to reclaim what he had lost.

*My Adventures with Superman* may be setting the stage for a similar narrative, especially since the creators are also developing a spinoff, *My Adventures with Green Lantern*. This new series will center on Jessica Cruz, who is set to make a cameo in season 3 of *My Adventures with Superman*. Clogher hinted that the upcoming series will draw inspiration from *Sailor Moon*, which aired alongside *Dragon Ball Z* during Cartoon Network’s Toonami block in 1998.

“Our interpretation of Superman is clearly influenced by *Dragon Ball Z*, among other sources; there’s a significant anime presence. *Lantern* is inspired by a different aspect of the same Toonami block. Once we start releasing promos, it will be evident which part of the Toonami lineup inspired our Green Lantern series. We’re not being subtle about it.”

Season 3 of *My Adventures with Superman* is set to premiere on Adult Swim on June 13.
