Subnautica 2’s Early Access Launch Date Announced After Legal Challenges
Subnautica 2 has recently gained more attention for the dramatic fallout between its developers and publishers than for being the highly anticipated sequel to one of the best crafting and exploration games ever created. However, with the official announcement of its Early Access release date—confirming earlier speculation—it’s time for the game to reclaim the spotlight. A new cinematic trailer has revealed that the launch is set for May 14.
This news, however, isn’t without its share of drama. Developers Unknown Worlds claim that the May release window was leaked by Krafton back in March as a way to undermine the team after a significant court loss regarding control over the game’s launch. This marked the conclusion of a year-long legal struggle, during which Krafton seemed to attempt to avoid a hefty $250 million payout by delaying the game and dismissing key project leaders.
In just a couple of weeks, we can hopefully shift the conversation from the legal and political mess surrounding the game to what the crafting adventure has in store for players.
Unfortunately, a cinematic trailer doesn’t provide much insight into the actual gameplay, as it showcases what the game doesn’t look like. It’s puzzling that such trailers still exist when the games themselves are visually stunning, but at least it brings the good news that on May 14, we’ll be able to dive into the incomplete version of the game.
The original Subnautica is a prime example of what Early Access can achieve, being highly playable from its initial release and evolving into something truly remarkable by the time it hit version 1.0. I’m really hopeful that the sequel will follow a similar path, and I can’t wait to explore a brand-new aquatic alien world.
