Gemini Launches for Vehicles Featuring Built-in Google Integration

Google is gearing up to enhance vehicles equipped with Google built-in by introducing its Gemini AI assistant. This upgrade will replace the existing Google Assistant, promising a more seamless experience for natural conversations, retrieving vehicle-specific details, adjusting settings, and much more.

“When cars with Google built-in first launched in 2020, we committed to making your car better over time,” said a senior product manager. “This means Gemini will not only be available in new cars but also in existing models through a software update.”

This announcement aligns with General Motors’ recent reveal that Gemini will be integrated into 4 million vehicles from the 2022 model year and newer, including Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC. However, Google hasn’t limited the update to specific models, indicating that the Gemini upgrade will likely be available for a broader range of vehicles. The rollout will begin with English in the US and will expand over the coming months.

With these enhancements, drivers can expect to have more natural interactions with the AI, such as asking for nearby restaurant recommendations or playlist suggestions, rather than relying on a strict set of commands. Gemini will also be able to summarize and respond to text messages, provide real-time journey updates, and answer specific queries about the vehicle, including electric vehicle insights like current battery levels.

Eligible users signed into their Google Account in their car will see the option to upgrade to Gemini. Google plans to extend this upgrade to more regions and languages soon, allowing drivers to safely access information from apps like Gmail, Calendar, and Google Home.
