Did the Unexpected Delay of Subnautica 2 Benefit the Game? The Answer is Mixed.
Subnautica 2 was initially set to launch in Early Access on Steam in the latter half of 2025. However, the release was postponed by Krafton to sidestep a hefty $250 million bonus for the co-founders of Unknown Worlds, the studio behind the game. This led to a chaotic power struggle and a complicated legal dispute, culminating in a judge’s ruling that returned the launch decisions to the studio. The question now is whether this unexpected delay has impacted the most-wishlisted game on Steam.
“I’ve always been a proponent of launching as early as possible,” said Anthony Gallegos, the lead designer of Subnautica 2. “I tend to align more with Charlie [Cleveland] than others. But even among the founders, opinions can vary.” He noted that determining the right launch moment is often a subjective call, something that many developers feel they’ll recognize when they see it.
Due to the delay, Unknown Worlds has been enhancing the launch content for Subnautica 2, with the team stating they’ve worked diligently to incorporate significantly more features into the game. Gallegos mentioned that this might be the most comprehensive and feature-rich early access launch the studio has ever undertaken.
However, the additional time has also meant that Unknown Worlds hasn’t yet gathered player feedback on the sequel, which is a crucial aspect of Early Access development. The community’s input is vital for identifying issues that the development team might overlook. Gallegos acknowledged that one downside of the delay is the lack of community feedback that they would have otherwise received.
The wait for player reactions won’t be much longer, as Subnautica 2 now has a release date set for May 14. But as with any Early Access launch, this is just the starting point.
