Celeste Co-Creator Unveils Stunning New Game Boy-Style Metroidvania I Can’t Wait to Experience

There’s an exciting new pixel art Metroidvania set to launch next year that has definitely caught my attention. It’s called City of None, crafted by one of the co-creators of Celeste, and it’s under the same studio label.

Just take a look at this:

I’m really digging this pixel art style, which channels those nostalgic Game Boy vibes while still feeling fresh and modern, showcasing the capabilities of current hardware with intricate details. The teaser soundtrack is impressive, and there are additional tracks on the game’s official website that are equally fantastic, particularly “Among the Heaps” and “City Outskirts.” It definitely has that strong Game Boy energy!

City of None presents itself as a platforming adventure where players navigate a vast city, working to reclaim it from some nefarious characters who have taken control. The game is being developed by Noel Berry, who co-created Celeste and contributed significantly to its stunning art, alongside his brother Liam, who is handling the sound design for City of None. It seems like it’s primarily a duo effort, with support from the team at Extremely OK Games, the studio established by another Celeste creator, Maddy Thorson, after the game’s release. Both Celeste and Thorson’s previous title, TowerFall, are published by Extremely OK Games, and City of None will follow suit. There was also another project in the works called Earthblade, but it was unfortunately canceled last year due to some team disagreements.

While details about City of None are still limited, we do know it’s set to release on Steam sometime next year.
