Metal Gear Solid 2 HD Source Code Allegedly Surfaces After 15 Years

The source code for various versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 has reportedly surfaced online, shared in a thread on a popular forum by an anonymous user. While the exact source of the leak remains uncertain, the files appear to be dated 03/04/2007, suggesting they might have been utilized for the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, which launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November 2011.

The initial leak seems to have originated from a thread on the /vr/ board, featuring a partial download link to a data-sharing site. As with any leak, especially those from anonymous sources, skepticism is warranted. However, based on early reactions and screenshots shared in the thread, along with a subsequent thread on the /v/ board, there’s a growing belief that this source code could indeed be authentic.

According to users who claim to have accessed the files, there are some intriguing aspects regarding their contents. Notably, the leak reportedly lacks any actual assets from Metal Gear Solid 2, with the total file size being only 155.8 megabytes.

While this might raise doubts about its legitimacy, it seems to consist solely of the source code, which could be highly valuable for those interested in modding or porting the game to different platforms. The files are said to include the source code for multiple versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 HD, covering the Xbox 360, PS3, and PlayStation Vita ports.

Interestingly, it also appears to contain code for Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, the expanded edition of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, for both PC and the Nintendo Wii. The PC version is expected, given that Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance was released on Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PC, but a Wii version was never officially announced or released.

If this leak is genuine, one theory suggests that the source code may have come from Armature Studio, the team behind the PlayStation Vita port of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. After being acquired by Meta in 2022, Armature Studio was shut down in January 2026. It’s not uncommon for source code to leak following a studio’s closure, as employees may take hard drives or equipment home, or such items may be auctioned off when a developer disbands.
