Sony Agrees to $7.8 Million Settlement for PlayStation Users in PSN Digital Games Lawsuit

The Northern District of California has given the green light for a preliminary settlement in a case against Sony, led by plaintiff Agustin Caccuri. The lawsuit claims that Sony has been monopolizing the gaming market by restricting third-party digital sales on its platforms. As part of this preliminary agreement, Sony is set to pay around $7.8 million to “all persons in the United States” who bought specific digital games through the PlayStation Network (PSN) between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023.

This preliminary approval was granted on April 8 and was officially announced by a legal firm on April 29. It’s important to note that this case is separate from the ongoing “PlayStation You Owe Us” collective proceedings initiated against Sony in 2022. This particular case, titled “Caccuri, et al. v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC,” started on May 7, 2021.

The settlement faced a setback in July 2025 when it was denied due to issues like a lack of estimated recovery for class members, despite Sony having agreed to the terms. Now that the settlement has received preliminary approval, a “Fairness Hearing” is scheduled for October 15, 2026. The settlement will only be finalized if the hearing determines that the proposed agreement is “fair, reasonable, and adequate to the Settlement Class.”

To clarify, the $7.8 million settlement pertains specifically to “game-specific vouchers” that could be bought from retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart. While the settlement mentions “other third-party retailers,” it seems to only cover digital codes purchased from physical stores, meaning it likely doesn’t include games bought online from websites.

A list of eligible titles can be found on the PSN Digital Games Settlement website. The process for receiving credits appears to be automatic, as the preliminary approval indicates that “credits” will be distributed via direct notifications sent to the email addresses linked to the PlayStation accounts of those in the Settlement Class.
