Game Developer Addresses Community Worries Following Recent Layoffs
The community surrounding Marvel Snap is understandably anxious about the game’s future following recent layoffs at developer Second Dinner. In response, co-founder Ben Brode stepped in to reassure players that the studio remains dedicated to Marvel Snap.
Since its launch in 2022, Marvel Snap has built a robust player base. However, that community has dwindled over time due to player fatigue and ongoing debates about the game’s monetization strategies. Back in March, Second Dinner announced that it would take until the end of 2026 to address some lingering issues and better prepare the game for future updates.
In the weeks following that announcement, game designer Glenn Jones departed from Second Dinner, and several developers, including community manager Griffin Bennett, were laid off. Content creator Regis Killbin shared a post on X that encapsulated the community’s feelings about these changes.
The departure of key staff members has raised significant concerns among players, who have taken to the game’s official Reddit and Discord channels to express their worries. Many fear that support for Marvel Snap may be dwindling, as it has felt like the game has been on a slow decline for some time.
Initially, Second Dinner remained quiet about the layoffs, but on May 1, Ben Brode addressed the situation on Marvel Snap’s Discord. He explained the reasons behind the layoffs and reassured players that the studio is committed to fulfilling the promises made in the March blog post.
“We said goodbye to a few members of our team yesterday, including our awesome community manager,” Brode stated. “He truly cared about this community, and we’re going to miss him. We know many of you will, too. These decisions were tough and reflect nothing on the quality of the people leaving. They are all talented, wonderful individuals. For those of you worried about Snap, we’re still here, still building, and still committed to this game and to you. The roadmap we shared in March remains unchanged. This is about making difficult choices to ensure we can continue, not a sign that we’re winding down. We’re here to support you.”
Historically, layoffs at a live service game developer can signal trouble, even if leadership insists otherwise. While this situation isn’t as dire as some past incidents, Brode’s message hasn’t fully restored my confidence as a dedicated Marvel Snap player. I plan to keep playing for now, but these layoffs have certainly shaken my faith in the game’s future more than any previous controversy over the last four years.
Marvel Snap continues to be available and is receiving updates on Android, iOS, and PC. The next season, Daredevil: Crimson Twilight, is set to launch on May 5.
