Bungie Has Long-Term Plans for Marathon’s Storyline
As the inaugural season of Marathon wraps up, players are left immersed in a captivating sci-fi universe filled with intriguing mysteries. The future direction of this extraction shooter’s narrative is still up in the air, but creative director Julia Nardin has hinted that the team has exciting plans for the evolving story on Tau Ceti IV over the next few years.
“We have a vision for where we want to take the story, but it’s not entirely ‘locked in’ because we value our players’ input in shaping it,” she shared. Nardin emphasized that player engagement in the narrative is a key aspect of the live service experience.
Marathon centers on corporate factions hiring gig workers known as runners to imprint their consciousness into artificial bodies called shells, scavenging for valuable loot and data in the remnants of an abandoned space colony and its derelict orbiting ship. While the backstory of the colonists and a rogue AI aboard the Marathon colony ship remains static, players can explore this lore at their own pace, while the game’s world-building will continue to evolve, drawing from its history and a future that excites the community.
“It’s crucial that players can dive into Marathon at any time,” Nardin noted. “They’ll always have the opportunity to uncover the mysteries of Tau Ceti’s past while engaging with its present. We aim for each season to serve as a fresh entry point, ensuring new players can grasp the story regardless of how long the rest of us have been running.”
Season 2 is slated to launch in early June, with various updates planned to keep the game fresh through August. A significant question for this latest live service title is the type of player base needed to sustain it and how long the company will continue to invest in reaching that goal. While official sales or player numbers haven’t been disclosed, recent estimates suggest over 2 million copies sold, with a majority of players on PC.
Nardin’s remarks signal Bungie’s commitment to Marathon, following an earlier indication in a blog post about PC optimization that stated, “We are in it for the long haul with Marathon. We look forward to many years of steady improvements to every aspect of the game.”
While plans may evolve and there’s always a risk of cutbacks if post-launch support becomes too costly compared to initial success, it’s clear that existing fans have only begun to explore what Bungie envisions for the game’s future.
