Marvel’s New Fighting Game Features an Unexpected Black Panther

Arc System Works has dropped a new trailer for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, unveiling that Black Panther and Hulk are joining the roster as part of the “Fighting Avengers” team. While the inclusion of these iconic characters isn’t entirely unexpected, the twist comes with the revelation that Shuri will take on the mantle of Black Panther instead of T’Challa.

Traditionally, T’Challa has been the face of Black Panther in games like Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Marvel’s Avengers, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. However, the Black Panther legacy is one that has been passed down through generations, with various characters stepping into the role in both comics and films. Notably, the upcoming Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will feature Azzuri, T’Challa and Shuri’s grandfather, as the playable Black Panther.

In light of Chadwick Boseman’s passing in 2020, Disney opted not to recast T’Challa, instead positioning Shuri as the MCU’s Black Panther. This decision aligns with the comics, where Shuri first donned the mantle in 2009 and has done so on several occasions since. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls marks the first console game to prominently feature Shuri as the primary Black Panther.

According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, Arc System Works has established Shuri as the ruler of Wakanda in the game’s universe, although she has only recently taken on this role. The developers have crafted her character to be “sleek” and “acrobatic,” emphasizing quick movements and mid-range combat prowess.

I’m really excited about the choice to make Shuri the Black Panther in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. It’s a smart move that enhances MCU synergy while also promoting gender diversity in a roster that could easily lean towards male heroes and villains. Plus, I tend to favor faster characters in fighting games, so I’ll definitely be adding her to my team for my first match. Hulk, who was also showcased in the latest trailer, looks like a blast to play as well.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is set to launch for PC and PS5 on August 6. Players will get a chance to try out Black Panther in the demo available at Combo Breaker 2026 and Hong Kong Comic Con 2026 later this May.
