Pitt Fans Cross the Line by Heckling Broadway Star

As a newcomer to The Pitt, I’m not fully immersed in the fandom yet, but every time I catch a glimpse of the community buzzing about HBO Max’s medical drama, it strikes me that this is a show best enjoyed in solitude. Fandom drama and the oddities of parasocial relationships usually stay tucked away in the depths of the internet, but occasionally, they spill into the real world. In those moments, it seems some fans forget their manners, especially when they find themselves face-to-face with an actor from the show. This was the case with Isa Briones, who plays Trinity Santos, during her Broadway performance, prompting her to remind fans to behave appropriately.

On May 2, Briones took to Instagram to address Pitt fans who had heckled her during her recent performances in the musical Just in Time, where she has been portraying Connie Francis since April. She specifically called out an audience member who shouted, “When are you going to finish your charts?” referencing a subplot from The Pitt’s second season where Trinity faces an overwhelming workload in the ER.

Let’s be clear: Broadway is not a place for chaos. Shouting things at performers is out of line. Yelling “When are you going to finish your charts” right before I sing “Who’s Sorry Now” is incredibly disrespectful to both the performers and the rest of the audience. It’s frustrating.

Let’s keep the love and light flowing, but remember that we’re all sharing a space and experiencing art together.

Since the pandemic began, many have noticed a decline in proper etiquette at live events, whether it’s concerts, stand-up shows, or Broadway performances. Heckling and crowd interactions have become prevalent on social media, particularly in the stand-up scene, leading to a misunderstanding of how to engage in different settings. There’s a reason you don’t hear audiences singing along to “Defying Gravity” at most Wicked performances. Broadway audiences are expected to be respectful observers unless invited to participate. Briones’ experience highlights how some Pitt fans have crossed the line, seeking a reaction from an actor in their beloved show. Well, they certainly got one.
