Kickstarter Campaign for Brandon Sanderson Anthology Hits $1 Million Milestone

Brandon Sanderson’s upcoming novel, *Songs of the Dead*, steps away from his Cosmere universe to explore a magical rendition of modern London, where a clandestine group of magic users protects the city. Co-author Peter Orullian has faced health challenges and is fundraising for his medical expenses through a science fiction and fantasy anthology that features an excerpt from *Songs of the Dead*, alongside contributions from 34 other authors.

The anthology, titled *Unbroken: New Tales by Masters of Fantasy*, has already surpassed $1 million since its Kickstarter launch on April 21. The initiative was inspired by Shawn Speakman, who funded his own medical bills with the 2013 anthology *Unfettered: Tales by Masters of Fantasy*, and he is co-editing this new collection with Orullian. The lineup of contributors is impressive, including *Dungeon Crawler Carla* author Matt Dinniman, Dungeons & Dragons legend R.A. Salvatore, and *The Magicians* author Lev Grossman. The audiobook version will be narrated by Travis Baldree, author of *Legends & Lattes*.

A $15 ebook edition is set to release in August, alongside a $50 trade hardcover. Signed copies from all contributors are available starting at $250, though they are currently sold out. Backers can also opt for a copy of *Songs of the Dead*, designed by Orullian, or his reinterpretation of *It’s a Wonderful Life*, titled *The Bell Ringer*, which is due out in September.

*Songs of the Dead* is scheduled for release on June 16, marking the beginning of a new series called The Strata Wars. Sanderson has a busy year ahead, with a new Cosmere novel, *The Fires of December*, also set to launch later this year, and an Apple TV movie adaptation of his *Mistborn* series in development. If The Strata Wars takes off, he may delegate much of the work to Orullian, similar to how he entrusted his Cytoverse YA series to co-author Janci Patterson. Their next Cytoverse installment, *Blightfall*, is expected in September.
