Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 Breaks Its Long Silence with Exciting Updates

It’s been two and a half years since Mizu (Maya Erskine) carved her way through Edo Japan in *Blue Eye Samurai*, Netflix’s visually stunning animated revenge saga. The acclaimed series was renewed in 2023, but updates have been sparse since August 2025, when creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green shared a teaser featurette.

Netflix has now confirmed that the series is still in development and is “coming soon,” with a preview of the new season set to be showcased at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June.

The first season of *Blue Eye Samurai* concluded with Mizu departing from her allies to journey to London, where the Irish smuggler and arms dealer Abijah Fowler (Kenneth Branagh) hinted that she could discover the identities of the two men who might be her father. The new logline reveals that Mizu’s adventure will continue in the British capital, where she’ll encounter “new friends, old foes, and her own demons.” Meanwhile, back in Japan, Mizu’s apprentice Ringo (Masi Oka) is on a quest for purpose, believing Mizu perished in a fire in Edo. Princess Akemi (Brenda Song) and the overconfident swordsman Taigen (Darren Barnet) will be caught up in palace intrigue following the Shogun’s death in the season finale.

In addition to the update on *Blue Eye Samurai*, Netflix hinted at several other projects to be featured at the festival. The animated *Ghostbusters* series from Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan, first announced in 2022, is set for release in 2027. Ricky Gervais’ adult animated series *Alley Cats* is premiering on August 7. *Sparks of Tomorrow*, a new alternate-history anime set in a steam-powered version of 20th-century Kyoto, will debut on July 5. This year will also see the arrival of Brad Bird’s *Ray Gunn* and *The Ribbon Hero*, an adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s shōjo manga *Princess Knight*.

This is much more than a power fantasy.
