Switch 2 Set for Price Hike Later This Year
Nintendo has announced a price increase for the Switch 2, raising the cost by $50 to $499.99, effective September 1.
In Europe, the price will rise by €30, bringing it to €499.99, while in Canada, it will go up by CA$50 to CA$679.99. There’s no confirmation yet on whether the U.K. will see a similar increase.
Japanese gamers are facing the steepest hikes, with all models of the original Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2 seeing price increases starting May 25. The Japan-exclusive model of the Switch 2 will jump by ¥10,000 to ¥59,980, and original Switch models will see increases ranging from ¥8,000 to ¥11,000. Additionally, a one-year subscription to Nintendo Switch Online will cost ¥1,000 more.
Nintendo explained that these adjustments are due to changes in market conditions and the global business outlook. This move comes in response to the ongoing global shortage of computer memory, which has led to rising prices for RAM and storage.
The company expressed regret over the impact of these price changes on customers and stakeholders, thanking them for their understanding.
Nintendo has been more cautious with price increases compared to its competitors, who have already made significant hikes. In March, Sony raised the PlayStation 5 price by $100 to $150, while Microsoft increased Xbox Series console prices by $100 to $200 in two separate hikes in 2025.
As a result of these price adjustments, Nintendo informed investors that it anticipates slower sales for the Switch 2 over the next year, which is atypical for a console in its second year. However, the console has had a strong launch, with 19.86 million units sold so far. Even with a revised projection of 16.5 million units in its second year, the Switch 2 would still outpace the original Switch’s sales at that point in its lifecycle.
