PlayStation Embraces AI as a Key Asset in Game Development
During a recent earnings presentation, Sony discussed its approach to AI, particularly in the context of PlayStation game development. Generative AI is becoming more prevalent in larger titles, although many indie developers remain skeptical. Sony views AI as a “powerful tool,” emphasizing that the “vision, design, and emotional impact of our games will always come from the talent of our studios and performers,” and that “AI is meant to augment their capabilities, not to replace them.”
At its studios, Sony reports that developers are leveraging AI to streamline repetitive tasks, boost software engineering efficiency, and enhance processes like quality assurance, 3D modeling, and animation with innovative AI-driven tools. A notable example is a tool named “Mockingbird,” which animates 3D facial models using performance capture data, completing animation tasks that previously took hours in mere seconds.
Studios like Naughty Dog, known for The Last of Us, and Santa Monica Studio, creators of God of War, have utilized this tool, with Mockingbird’s work appearing in titles such as Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. Sony clarifies, however, that “we are not replacing human performers, but rather optimizing how we process the data from these live captures.”
Additionally, Sony has teamed up with Bandai Namco to investigate how generative AI and cutting-edge technologies can best support a creator’s vision in video production. Their collaboration has revealed “massive gains in speed and productivity per person” and identified areas where “AI can produce highly sophisticated and realistic outputs” that were previously unattainable due to “time constraints.” Nonetheless, Sony acknowledges the “lack of consistency and controllability” as a drawback of generative AI models.
In the same earnings report, Sony revealed that PS5 sales have decreased by 46 percent year over year following significant price increases.
