Capcom Unveils Free Roguelike Mode for Resident Evil Requiem

Resident Evil Requiem has just dropped its latest update across all platforms, and while it includes some standard bug fixes, the highlight is a brand-new game mode. Titled “Leon Must Die Forever,” this mode offers a replayable roguelike experience centered around Leon S. Kennedy, complete with his signature quips.

Back in March, shortly after the game launched to rave reviews, the director teased upcoming story DLC and a mini-game update. While the story DLC is still on the horizon, the new mode arrived on May 8, delivering an action-packed experience reminiscent of Mercenaries. It remixes Leon’s levels from the main game into an arcade-style format focused on scoring points and unlocking upgrades.

I’ve had a chance to dive into this new mode, and while I’m thrilled to have another reason to revisit Resident Evil Requiem, I find it puzzling that much of the original campaign dialogue remains. It feels like it could have been trimmed down, giving the mode a vibe more akin to a polished fan mod than an official addition. Nevertheless, I’m all in for the chance to take down hordes of monsters and zombies as the ever-charismatic Leon.

Resident Evil Requiem has proven to be a major hit, selling over six million copies since its February release and earning its place as one of the most acclaimed entries in the franchise. I’m eager to see if there are plans for further support beyond the announced story DLC. Regardless, with the main game, this new arcade mode, and various extras, Requiem is shaping up to be one of the standout single-player experiences of 2026. Not too shabby for a franchise that not long ago seemed to be fading away.
