Latest Release of Alan Moore’s Batman: The Killing Joke Priced at Over $17,000

Batman: The Killing Joke stands as a pivotal chapter in the Dark Knight’s saga. Crafted by Alan Moore with striking visuals from Brian Bolland, this tale dives deep into the complex rivalry between Batman and the Joker, pushing the boundaries of the character’s narrative and presenting a darker, more brutal interpretation of the iconic villain. Its impact on the Batman mythos is undeniable, and it continues to resonate with fans. Now, a unique publisher is testing the waters of collector’s pricing with their new “Avant-Garde” edition, which is set to retail for a staggering $17,409.

Hailing from Croatia, Argent Comics aims to transform DC’s legendary stories into collectible art pieces. Their inaugural release in this venture is the Batman: The Killing Joke Avant-Garde Edition. This special edition comes packaged in a replica of the camera used by the Joker in his infamous act against Barbara Gordon. The comic itself is giclée-printed, bound with aluminum covers, and lined with luxurious goatskin leather. Only 47 copies will be produced, a nod to the atomic number of the silver-like Hahnemühle metallic paper used, rather than a reference to the “Silver Age” comics where the Joker was known for his whimsical escapes. Each copy will bear Bolland’s signature, though securing Moore’s autograph may prove challenging.

Interestingly, the Avant-Garde edition addresses a major complaint among fans regarding recent prints of The Killing Joke. In 2008, DC Comics released a Deluxe Edition that featured a new color palette by Bolland, which many felt diminished the rich, textured work originally done by colorist John Higgins in 1988. This alteration has sparked ongoing debate among fans, especially as newer reprints often follow suit with similar digital treatments. Argent Comics’ edition proudly restores Higgins’ original colors, making it a compelling choice for collectors.

For those dedicated to their collections, Argent Comics is welcoming visitors to their Zagreb office to experience the Killing Joke firsthand, but appointments are necessary. This high-end offering contrasts sharply with the success of DC’s Compact Comics line, which has gained popularity for delivering classic stories, including Moore’s Watchmen, in more accessible formats.
