PlayStation 3 Emulator Developers Request an End to AI Code Submissions

The RPCS3 team, the creators of the open-source PlayStation 3 emulator, recently took to X to politely urge users to “stop submitting AI slop code pull requests” on their GitHub page. However, they didn’t hold back in the replies, delivering some entertaining responses to those trying to defend their poorly coded submissions.

Since its launch in 2011, RPCS3 has established itself as the premier PS3 emulator for most users. Anyone who has used it knows just how remarkable this software is. Over the past few years, the team has successfully made 70% of the PlayStation 3’s game library fully playable, thanks in part to contributions from the community on GitHub.

“Please stop submitting AI slop code pull requests to RPCS3. We will start banning those who do without disclosing,” they stated. “There are plenty of resources online to learn how to debug and code instead of generating slop that you don’t understand and that doesn’t work.”

This brings us to the current situation, as the RPCS3 team has clearly reached their limit with the influx of useless, AI-generated code cluttering their GitHub. Their request was relatively polite, but their follow-up responses were less so, yet completely warranted. One standout reply came when someone questioned how they could be sure they weren’t rejecting human-written code. RPCS3 shot back, “You can’t possibly handwrite the type of shit AI slop we have been seeing.”

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first instance of developers on GitHub being inundated with AI-generated pull requests, and it likely won’t be the last. Earlier this year, Rémi Verschelde, the project manager for Godot Engine, mentioned that their GitHub had become so overwhelmed with AI-generated submissions that he was contemplating hiring additional maintainers just to manage the influx of low-quality code.
