Prime Video Unveils New Epic Fantasy Series, Leaving Wheel of Time Fans Heartbroken

The gaming community is still mourning the end of Prime Video’s adaptation of Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy series, The Wheel of Time. Showrunner Rafe Judkins delivered a visually stunning series with a fantastic cast, but it was cut short too soon. Fortunately, there’s another fantasy series on the horizon at Amazon’s Prime Video.

Fourth Wing, the inaugural novel in Rebecca Yarros’ best-selling The Empyrean romantasy series, is set to make its TV debut. The story centers on Violet Sorrengail, a young woman whose life is turned upside down by her strict mother, who forces her to attend the Basgiath War College to train as a dragon rider. The catch? If you don’t graduate, you die. Talk about a tough school experience!

Development for the series began in October 2023, but it officially received a series order in May during Amazon’s 2026 Upfronts presentation at the Beacon Theatre. Meredith Averill, known for her work on Wednesday season 2, has been confirmed as the showrunner for Fourth Wing, collaborating with executive producer Michael B. Jordan.

The project will be developed at Amazon MGM Studios and Jordan’s Outlier Society production company. Joining Averill and Jordan are Yarros herself and Lisa Joy, co-creator of Westworld.

“I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them,” Yarros expressed.

“Violet’s journey in Fourth Wing has sparked a global phenomenon, captivating millions of readers and building an intensely passionate fanbase around its world, characters, and emotional stakes,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios. “Rebecca Yarros’ brilliant series is one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world, and with Meredith and our valued partners at Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated, we’re bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.”

Details about the Fourth Wing adaptation and its release date are still under wraps. While this new series will likely offer a different vibe compared to The Wheel of Time, fantasy enthusiasts have something exciting to anticipate, especially those who may be feeling uncertain about the upcoming projects in the Wheel of Time franchise.
