Meta to Notify Parents When Teens Update Their Instagram Interests
Starting Tuesday, parents will have a clearer view of their teens’ activities on Instagram. Meta is rolling out a new feature for Teen Accounts that reveals the “general topics their teens engage with,” such as “basketball” or “fashion.” Additionally, parents will receive notifications when their teen adds a new interest to their algorithm.
In December, Meta introduced the “Your Algorithm” feature, allowing users to select topics they want to see more or less of on Instagram. In its recent announcement, Meta highlighted that Teen Accounts already have restrictions on the topics they can include in their algorithm, ensuring that the content is appropriate, akin to what you’d find in a PG-13 movie.
On the same day, Meta revealed plans to streamline parental controls for Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger into a unified hub called Family Center. This will enable parents to send a single invitation to supervise their teen across all these platforms. Meta also mentioned that Family Center will soon offer additional supervision tools, including insights into the total time their teens spend on Meta’s apps.
