Sega pulls the plug on its enigmatic ‘Super Game’ project reminiscent of Fortnite.
Five years after unveiling its ambitious “Super Game” project, Sega has quietly scrapped the initiative. In a recent earnings report, the parent company, Sega Sammy, stated that it has “decided to cancel Super Game” after reassessing its strategy regarding free-to-play games as a service.
Sega has already reassigned over 100 developers from the free-to-play division to other teams focused on established franchises. This shift indicates that Sega is pivoting away from the Super Game concept to concentrate on its beloved game series. This includes ongoing projects like the new Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage titles that were revealed at The Game Awards in 2023.
Additionally, Sega confirmed that it is actively developing a new Virtua Fighter game and a sequel to Alien: Isolation.
The Super Game initiative was first announced in 2021, but details were scarce. Sega described it as a new intellectual property aimed at a global audience, with plans for a release during the 2026 fiscal year. While it was distinct from Creative Assembly’s canceled shooter Hyenas, it shared a similar ambition of launching a new IP on a worldwide scale.
In 2022, Sega characterized the Super Game initiative as a strategy to create “new and innovative titles” with an emphasis on global appeal, online interaction, community engagement, and leveraging existing IPs. The initiative included high-budget reboots of franchises like Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio, which are still set to be released.
The cancellation of the Super Game project reflects a broader trend among major publishers who have invested heavily in games-as-a-service (GaaS) models, only to retreat as many new titles struggled to compete with established hits like Fortnite, Destiny 2, Call of Duty, and Grand Theft Auto Online.
Fortunately for Sega, the company has a wealth of successful franchises to rely on, which is promising news for both the company and fans of its classic games.
