Rescue Overwatch Heroes from the Chaos of Fortnite Crossovers!

Maybe I’m too critical to enjoy Fortnite, which seems to have become the reigning champion of modern crossover chaos. However, witnessing its cultural influence seep into games I cherish, like Overwatch, makes me wonder if my disdain isn’t strong enough. The constant references and collaborations have become a cornerstone of Overwatch’s strategy, seemingly aiming to tap into Fortnite’s vast multi-fandom appeal, and I’m growing weary of so many franchises merging into one another. Overwatch has ramped up its crossover skins in recent years, so it’s not surprising that its heroes are now set to join Fortnite for shootouts with characters like Rick and Morty and Huntr/x from KPop Demon Hunters.

After a flurry of leaks and speculation, it was finally revealed that D.Va, Tracer, Genji, and Mercy will be making their way to Fortnite on May 14. The announcement trailer feels a bit clumsy and recycles voice lines from a decade ago for several characters. I’m not a fan of how Fortnite’s art style alters these characters, stripping away their Pixar-like charm.

It’s just a bit disheartening. This crossover would have been thrilling a decade ago when Overwatch was at its peak and Fortnite hadn’t yet thrown every piece of pop culture into its chaotic mix. Now? I just wish I could swoop in and rescue these characters from this predicament.

In the end, this is a promotional move for Overwatch following its soft reboot earlier this year to celebrate the hero shooter’s 10th anniversary. If anyone feels nostalgic for Overwatch and decides to check it out through this crossover, they’ll discover the game is in one of its best states ever. Still, I can’t shake off that uncomfortable feeling.
